Simmer Dim Aurora visible in Shetland across Aurora Cam Network

Amber and then brief Red Aurora alerts, clear skies all across Shetland but summer is approaching and Shetland does not really get dark skies at this time of the year.

The Simmer Dim was very visible on all the north facing cameras as the sun rolls around from north west to north east not too far beneath the horizon.

Aurora occurs all year round but seeing it becomes pretty much impossible in the summer months. Due to the brief intensity of the event and the ability of our aurora cams to deal with such vast dynamic range the summer aurora was indeed visible in Shetland.

As all our cameras saw different areas of the sky from different locations (rare in itself) I have compiled the event from 23:55GMT on Friday 16th May 2025 until 00:35GMT on Saturday 17th May 2025. In reality it was seen just after midnight on Saturday 17th local time heading towards the darkest period.

I am not sure this will be seen again so easily as there are so many variables in this equation to allow capture of the summer twilight in all its glory along with a briefly intense auroral event around one month away from mid summer and from so many cameras. Shetland has also experienced a fantastic period of stable weather.

As always, use the x4 speed on the video player to make the best use of your time.
